On Thursday, 7th May, our Year 2 students enjoyed an exciting and enriching excursion to the Rio Tinto Naturescape at Kings Park. The visit provided a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with nature while participating in the Noongar Boodjar Six Seasons Programme, an immersive learning experience designed to deepen understanding of Aboriginal culture and knowledge.

Throughout the day, students engaged in activities that fostered respect for Aboriginal people and traditions, while also developing an appreciation for their own responsibility in caring for the natural environment. The excursion focused on Djeran, the cool transitional season in the Noongar calendar, helping students understand the rhythms of the land and seasonal changes from a First Nations perspective.

The learning began with an immersive Aboriginal dance workshop, where students discovered how dance is used as a powerful form of storytelling. They enthusiastically participated, using movement to communicate ideas and stories connected to culture and Country.

Next, was a storytelling workshop titled “Chunyart and the Cheeky Parrot.” Students listened attentively to the story before taking part in a range of hands-on activities inspired by it. These included exploring traditional first aid practices, practising simple hunting skills using sticks and gum nuts, and learning Noongar Boodjar language through a fun and engaging memory game. Students also expressed their creativity through art and craft, using Aboriginal symbols to create meaningful artworks.

To conclude the day, students had time to explore the Naturescape playground, enjoying the natural beauty and adventurous spaces before heading back to school with smiles and many wonderful new experiences to share.

It was a memorable and meaningful excursion that enriched students’ understanding of culture, community and the environment.
