On Monday, 11th May, our Pre-Primary to Year 6 students had the opportunity to enjoy an entertaining incursion performed by the Yirra Yaakin group. Below are recounts from two senior students.
The Yirra Yaakin Performance was amazing! It was about stars disappearing because we are stuck on technology and not listening to each other. The main characters are an emu, a crow and a kangaroo. The sky is getting darker because everyone was forgetting the stories, culture and people. There was a mix if lots of cultures like Aboriginal, Spanish, Scottish, and Indian. They sang songs and created joy through songs and dance which helped to fix the dark sky. We learnt the Noongar words for twinkle twinkle little star (Djinda djinda kanangoor) I really loved the performance. It was funny and cultural and I really enjoyed it! I recommend other schools to have Yirra Yaakin come out and do this performance.

On the 11th of May 2026, we were delighted to have Jeremy, Pri, and Alana from Yirra Yaakin, a Noongar theatre company visit our school. Along with their amazing and humorous production of Djinda Kaatijin a performance about the Seven Sisters and Missing Djinda, we also took an adventure to Spain, Scotland, and India to help save the stars! With plenty of help from the audience, we were able to find the Djinda and retrieve knowledge, music, and stories! Along with many acting techniques such as multi gender roles, improv, creative costumes, and accents, we thank the morals that came with each location: treat others how you want to be treated, teamwork & belief, never let others take you down and, remember to fight for what is right. Thank you Yirra Yaakin for this stunning performance!
