Our Year 5 students were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to welcome Mr Steve Catania, Member for Midland, to St Anthony’s School as part of our HASS Civics and Citizenship unit.
Steve shared his role and responsibilities as a politician, what a typical day looks like and how he represents the community. Students also learnt about his journey into politics and had the opportunity to ask a range of thoughtful questions.
The visit also supported our upcoming speech writing unit, as students prepare for the 2027 student leadership process. Steve spoke about the importance of leadership and left students with an important message – great leaders are great listeners.
Student Reflections:
Hannah and Harper:
“We learnt a lot about him and his roles and responsibilities. We learnt that his dad and brother were both leaders as well. We were able to ask him a lot of questions, and our favourite question was, ‘What’s one habit you must have as a leader?’ He said to be a good listener. It really helped us prepare for our leadership speeches next term!”
Kyle and Matthew:
“It’s crazy that he works long hours to make sure everyone’s voice is heard. We liked how we were able to ask so many questions and learnt what a politician’s day-to-day life looks like. We found out that he was a lawyer before becoming a leader. We are so grateful to have met him. We had seen him on signs before, but it was good to meet him in person.”
A big thank you to Steve for taking the time to visit our Year 5 classes and inspire our future leaders.
