In Term Two, Year Two students will continue to develop and practise concepts learnt at school while also building important life skills through the use of homework grids. These grids provide a range of engaging activities that allow children to apply their learning in practical and meaningful ways.
Homework grids will be issued and completed fortnightly and will include a mix of activities. Reading remains compulsory every day, and students are asked to record this in their reading log. The remaining activities on the grid may be completed on days of your family’s choosing across the fortnight. Once an activity has been completed, please remember to sign it.
Homework grids and reading logs will be due every second Monday for teacher checking and signing. On this day, the next homework grid will be glued into students’ folders.
To support the smooth running of homework and communication, all students are asked to keep their homework folders in their school bags every day. This allows for new readers to be sent home regularly and ensures any school notices or letters can be passed on promptly.
Thank you for your continued support at home as we work together to support your child’s learning.
Here are sample comprehension questions parents can use with Year Two children during daily reading practice. They are grouped to make them easy to follow and to suit different types of books.

These questions help children activate prior knowledge and make predictions.

- Have you read or heard about something like this before?
During Reading
These questions encourage children to think about meaning while they read.
- What is happening so far?
- Who are the main characters?
- Where is the story taking place?
- What has just happened that is important?
- Was there a tricky word? Can you reread the sentence to help work it out?
- Why do you think the character did that?
After Reading
These questions support recall, understanding, and discussion.
- Can you retell the story in your own words?
- What was your favourite part? Why?
- What was the problem in the story? How was it solved?
- How did the story make you feel?
- Would you recommend this book to someone else? Why or why not?
Character and Feelings

- Why do you think they felt that way?
- Did the character change? How?
Predicting and Connecting
- What do you think might happen next?
- What would you have done if you were the character?
- Does this story remind you of something that has happened to you or another book you’ve read?
For Non Fiction (Information Books)
- What did you learn from this book?
- What is one interesting fact?
- What was this book mostly about?
- Can you tell me something new you didn’t know before?
These questions don’t need to all be asked every night—just a few each session is perfect. The goal is to enjoy reading together while helping children think more deeply about what they read.
