This term, the Year 5 students have been thoroughly enjoying our class novel, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Through the story, we have explored important themes including kindness, friendship, empathy, courage, inclusion and celebrating our differences.
To celebrate completing our novel study, we would like to watch the film adaptation of Wonder with the students. The film is rated PG and will be shown at school as part of our English learning program.
About Wonder:
Wonder tells the story of August “Auggie” Pullman, a young boy born with a facial difference. After being homeschooled for much of his life, Auggie begins attending school for the first time in Year 5. The story follows his experiences as he makes friends, faces challenges and learns to navigate school life.
The novel and film explore themes of kindness, acceptance, friendship, bullying, resilience and looking beyond appearances. The film brings the story and characters the students have come to know and love to life on screen.
We believe watching the movie will be a lovely way to conclude our Wonder novel study and give students an opportunity to reflect on the themes and messages we have explored throughout the term.
If you would prefer your child did not watch the film, please email your child’s specific teacher (Alexis.Kiernan@cewa.edu.au or Martina.Sweeney@cewa.edu.au) to let us know. Students who do not watch the movie will be provided with alternative Wonder-related activities to complete in another supervised room.
The students have loved reading Wonder and we are looking forward to finishing our unit by watching the movie together!
Thank you for your continued support.
