Our Year 3’s are incredibly lucky to have secured an incursion with the amazing Wendy Binks, to link with our Visual Art and English curriculum. She will be visiting us on Thursday, 27th August, to work with us all morning. She is a well-known Western Australian author, illustrator and publisher that is most known for her book “Where’s Stripey?” The main character and inspiration for her stories (Stripey the emu) turns 21 this year, so you have probably seen Wendy’s books or even paintings of him around Perth.
As Wendy has written, illustrated and self-published most of her books, she knows the entire process of creating a picture book – from the tiny germ of an idea to the moment it appears on the shelf. She shares all of it with students, including videos of a book being printed and real examples of storyboards, roughs, props and final illustrations.
Throughout the session, Wendy sketches live in front of the class while talking about emus, owls, camouflage and where story ideas come from. She demonstrates how to draw animals using simple shapes and shows students how to give their animal real character. At the end of the session, every child draws their own animal!
We are currently looking at some of her books in class and are looking forward to working with her on the 27th August.
If you have any questions or feel that the proposed incursion may raise issues relevant to your child’s safe and full participation, please contact us to discuss these further.
